3D Medical Lab can print patient- specific 3D antomical models! It is the first company that is able to 3D print an aneurysm with an elastic material that can match the properties of a real aneurysm. The use of these 3D printed models opens the way to surgically treat complex and challenging aneurysms.
An aortic aneurysm (AA) is a pathological dilation of the aorta. In Western countries, this condition mainly occurs in the abdomen (abdominal aortic aneurysm: AAA). During the course of the disease, aneurysms can grow and eventually rupture. Most AA patients have no symptoms, so they don't know they have an aneurysm. Sudden rupture of aneurysms can lead to severe internal bleeding.
An AA can be treated with a minimally invasive procedure called EndoVascular Aortic Repair Stent Graft (EVAR). While EVAR is an effective procedure, about 15% of AAA cases are not eligible for the surgical procedure due to anatomical complexity. These cases are challenging because both CT scans and 3-dimensional CT reconstruction are difficult to interpret.
The use of a 3D printed model gives the surgeon much more insight into the patient-specific anatomical structures. In addition, the surgeon can practice the surgery on the 3D printed models and thus avoid errors during the operation.
3D printed vasculair models in combination with virtual 3D models give the surgeon much more insight into the complexity of the anatomical structures and possibly a higher success rate of the minimally invasive surgery.
We are very curious about the impact our 3D printed cardiovascular models will have on the long term. Only time can tell us...
We have done a lot of research into 3D printing of elastic vascular models. For more information, please contact: contact@3DMedicalLab.com
